DUMAGUETE CITY, Oct. 16 (PIA) -- Negros Oriental's annual provincial fiesta, the Buglasan Festival 2019, has officially opened.
Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo led the opening ceremonies of the festivity held at the Capitol Forecourt on Oct. 14, 2019.
In his speech, Degamo said the celebration is a display of the different culture and products of every town and city as well as the genuine hospitality of all its residents in the province.
"Ang Buglasan, mao kini gift para sa Negros Oriental. Aron mapakita nato ang talento, ang mga produkto, ang atoang kultura sa nagkalain-lain government units dire sa probinsiya (Buglasan is our gift to Negros Oriental. It is the time to showcase the talents, products, and culture of the different local government units in the province," Degamo said.
"Ang Buglasan Festival para ni nato tanan (Buglasan is for all of us). Buglasan is our way of celebrating life. It is our gesture of thanking the source of life for the generous blessing each and (every) one receives throughout the year. In the days ahead, feel free to enjoy to life. May you experience the warmth of every NegOrense smile, the sincerity of our friendship and the warmth of our genuine hospitality," Degamo added.
Several officials representing various government agencies attended the opening salvo of Buglasan Festival including the event's keynote speaker MGEN. Dinoh Dolina, acting commander of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Central Command.
Dolina represented LTG. Noel Clement, the newly appointed chief of staff of AFP, who was originally invited to give the keynote message but was not able to attend the event because of other important matters.
Dolina delivered Clement's message to Oriental Negrenses on the opening day of the Buglasan Festival.
"Today marks the beginning of series of activities that will showcase the distinct culture and tradition of Negros Oriental. It is a celebration of peace and camaraderie among the cities and municipalities of this province. This Buglasan Festival is significant not only to promote unity and harmony but also so that the people of this province will have a stronger grasp of their roots and preserve their heritage," Dolina said.
"A Landscape of opportunities speaks of the abundant potential of this province and the favourable circumstances that comes within. Negros Oriental is indeed ready and set for more inclusive development and just and lasting peace. All we really need to do is to synergise our efforts towards the attainment of that vision which we have been doing and what we continuously working to sustain," he added, referring to the theme of the festival this year which is Negros Oriental: A Landscape of Opportunities.
The AFP official also thanked the Provincial Government of Negros Oriental for inviting them to participate in the occasion and reiterated the security sector's commitment in achieving lasting peace in the province.
Aside from Dolina, the other officials present were Col. Noel Baluyan, commander of the 302nd Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army, Department of Tourism (DOT-7) Regional Director Shalimar Tamano, Philippine National Police Officer in Charge-Provincial Director Rizalito Gapas, Provincial Administrator Dr. Henry Sojor, other local officials, and officials of different religious groups in the province.
Other highlights during the opening day of the festival include the awarding of Sidlak NegOrense Award to different individuals and groups who excelled in the field of sports and arts within the country and abroad.
Later on, Degamo led the opening of Buglasan Local Government Unit (LGU) Booth Fair around the Capitol.
He personally went to every LGU booth and officiated the ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open it to revellers.
Each booth exhibits the premier tourist attraction and product of every town and city in the province.
The opening day culminated with a concert by Filipino rock band "Parokya ni Edgar."
This year's Buglasan Festival is until Oct. 27, 2019.
