DAVAO CITY, Oct. 23 (PIA)- A satellite laboratory of the Philippine Genome Center will be operational by the end of the year at its site inside the University of the Philippines Mindanao campus in Mintal, this city.

This was bared by Department of Science and Technology-XI regional director Anthony Sales at his guesting at the weekly Habi at Kape media forum in Ayala Abreeza Mall Davao.

The P100-million Mindanao Satellite Facility laboratory will be the center for molecular study in Mindanao. Among its capabilities is DNA research which will be useful for agricultural research, biodiversity conservation, forensics and paternity testing.

"We are expecting the facility to operate by the end of this year," says DOST-XI regional director Anthony Sales.

Among the uses for the facility include research on disease prevention particularly in agriculture.

"We can do DNA test of fusarium to map out virulence of the virus. We can determine thru DNA tests where there is large population of fusarium," Sales cited an example of the useful benefit of having a genome laboratory.

For biodiversity the genomics research can determine if there is still a critical mass of flora and fauna in Mindanao which will enable them to survive.

Sales said the laboratory will be run by a consortium which will be composed of DOST, UP-Mindanao, State Universities and Colleges doing genetic research, and the private sector like Tadeco and Unifrutti.

The Philippine Genome Center- Mindanao Satellite Facility will have modern equipment such as DNA sequencing machine, polymerase chain reaction plus supply of primers.

Sales said the DNA services will be at break-even costs to benefit potential stakeholders like those involved in agriculture and in biodiversity conservation.

The genome laboratory is the first outside Manila and is the second DNA laboratory in Davao next to the DNA-test capable Regional Crime Laboratory of the Police Regional Office-XI which opened in February of this year. (RG Alama)
