MAASIN CITY, May 29 (PIA) -- A centenarian in this city received P100,000 cash gift from the government through the Department of Social Welfare and Development 8 (DSWD-8) on Wednesday morning, May 27.

Perla Zialcita Kind, who turned 100 years old in October last year, received the amount from a DSWD-8 team led by Social Welfare Officer III Hilda B. Tambio in Barangay Mantahan, this city.

Donya Perla, as what her friends call her, was born on October 24, 1919.

She also received a Letter of Felicitation from President Rodrigo Roa Duterte congratulating her saying, "turning a century old is the biggest milestone a person can achieve."

The plaque also quoted Abraham Lincoln's line, "It is not the years that counts, but the life in your years."

Mayor Nacional V. Mercado, who led the LGU Maasin team, also congratulated Zialcita and asked her the secrets of long life.

"Do zumba and ballroom dancing once in a while, eat healthy and stay fit, avoid hatred and anger, less stress and laugh with friends," was the centenarian's reply to Mayor Mercado.

It was learned that Mercado also handed P30,000 cash gift from the LGU-Maasin City coffers during Donya Perla's 100th birthday.

As of this writing, a total of seven centenarians in Maasin City were already given cash gift by the DSWD according to CSWD Officer Jhade M. Bestudio.

The granting of cash gift is mandated under Republic Act 10868 or the Centenarians Act of 2016, an Act honoring and granting of additional benefits to Filipino centenarians, she said.

All Filipinos who reach 100 years old, whether residing in the Philippines or abroad, will be honored with a Letter of Felicitation from the President of the Philippines congratulating the celebrator for his or her longevity and a cash gift in the amount of P100,000. (ldl/rgc/PIA SoLeyte)
