TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Sept. 29 (PIA) - The Department of Health (DOH), recognizing the role of local government units in the implementation of various health programs, has again lobbied for their support in the conduct of the nationwide synchronized supplemental immunization activity for Measles Rubella and Oral Polio Vaccine targetting around 700,000 children 0-59 in Cagayan Valley.
"Bearing the campaign slogan "Chikiting Ligtas, sa Dagdag Bakuna Kontra Rubella, Polio at Tigdas", the event will be rolled-out come October 26 to Nov. 25, 2020 in the different communities nationwide," Dr. Nino Brian Galapia, medical officer IV of DOH - Center for Health and Development (CHD) said.
Despite the threat of COVID - 19, the National Inter-agency Task Force (NIATAF) endorsed the conduct of the MR - OPV Supplemental Immunization activity of DOH.
Based on Resolution No. 70 series of 2020 dated Sept. 10, 2020, health personnel shall be allowed to undertake immunization activities regardless of community quarantine status in the place where the immunization will be conducted.
LGUs are strongly enjoined to fully support the activity to ensure successful interruption of measles and polio transmission.
"We cannot afford to give another outbreak," Galapia said referring to the 2019 where an outbreak of circulating vaccine derived poliovirus (cVDPV) occurred in several areas of the country, almost 19 years after Philippines was declared polio-free.
Galapia reiterated that a Triage Protocol should be strictly followed.
He added that minimum health standards such as maintaining one to two meters distance between parents, mandatory wearing of face mask and face shield for both vaccination team and parents and hand sanitation before and after vaccination or finger marking. (MDCT/GVB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
