KATHMANDU, Nepal - On Monday, Rohingya families who fled Myanmar's genocide and have been living in Nepal for nearly a decade stage a protest outside the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Maharajgunj, Kathmandu, demanding official recognition as refugees.

The Rohingyas and refugees from other countries had gathered outside the UNHCR office to present a memorandum to press their demands.

Several refugees were injured during a fight between the police and the refugees after the latter insisted on seeing UNHCR representatives handing over their memorandum of 11 demands.

The refugees claim they struggle financially because they cannot work and support their families.

Until 2016, the United Nations provided monthly financial assistance to Rohingya refugees. They live on rented land in Kapan, located in northern Kathmandu.
